Your visit begins at Fort Calgary, where Grade 2 students take part in the Calgary: A Prairie Community  program.  Following bag lunch at the Fort, students head to Cantos Music Foundation for the Canada: Music Nation program (see description below for curriculum connections).

Watch for Cantos when you book your next visit to the Lougheed House!  Our music express team travel to Lougheed House music room for an entertaining and educational look at music and instruments from the turn of the century. Students will hear stories, listen to music and get hands on with a selection of instruments from the Cantos Gallery.

Grade 2 Music

Integrating subject matter from the Communities in Canada unit, the Canada: Music Nation program takes students on a musical tour of several Canadian provinces, introducing them to rare and wonderful Cantos Collection instruments that are connected with specific cultures in Canada.

Grade 2-6 Music

Close Encounters takes students on a journey through the evolution of keyboard instruments. Students learn about a variety of instruments and get to play some of them. This program can be modified somewhat to connect with other topics of study.

Grade 3 Music
Cantos Music Foundation has joined forces with the University of Calgary to bring the “King of Instruments” to life for Grade 3 students in Calgary. Taking place in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Recital Hall at the U of C’s Rozsa Centre, students get up close and personal with the Ahrend Organ, a beautiful Baroque pipe organ, and learn about the organ’s unique ways of making music.

Grades 7-12 Music
How and when did Rock and Roll begin?  What was the lead instrument in Rock’s earliest days?  What were some of the social and technological impacts of Rock? Go back in time and learn the story of the music that “blew the lid off the ‘50’s”.

Why was the piano invented?  What were the musical trends of centuries past?  What is the difference between a harpsichord and a hurdy gurdy?

Take a chronological look at the social and musical history surrounding certain key instruments in our collection with the Music Through the Ages program. Discuss keyboard evolution, sound mechanics, and compositional and performance practices of the 16th through 21st Centuries.  Students will hear and play certain instruments in our collection to enhance the discussion.  Tours of the restoration workshops available upon request.

Grades 7-12
The content and theme of this gallery tour can be organized to support your particular interests.  For instance, tours can be shaped to:

  • Incorporate singing with historical keyboard accompaniment
  • Place emphasis on the technology behind electronic instruments
  • Discuss tuning practices through the ages

 PROGRAMS THAT ARE CURRENTLY IN DEVELOPMENT FOR 2011!

Grade 4-6 Music
This off- and on-site program will showcase the magic of music and the movies through the creation of a silent movie scene.  Using iPhone technology, Grades 4 through 6 students will compose and record musical soundtracks to their scenes which are based on a topic of study form their Social Studies unit.

Available January 2011.

 

Grades 6-7

Designed to help jumpstart the beginning band student’s music education and help prepare them for their year ahead, this program offers instruction on of the basics of music theory and performance -  including principles of tuning, ensemble playing, and key music concepts -  via an engaging and unique tour of the Cantos gallery.




Grades 11-12

Study the principles of sound, circuitry and synthesis in this electronic-focused tour.
